Small does not mean thoughtless.
The idea is a useful little book exchange that feels considered, not something dropped outside as an afterthought. The proportions, the finish, the planting, and the way it sits beside the house all deserve an opinion.
I am starting with a kit rather than claiming I have suddenly become a carpenter. What I change, what I leave alone, and whether the result was worth the effort will be the interesting part.

Three decisions before the beautiful bit.
- Where it goes. Check the actual footprint, access, permissions where applicable, exposure, and the instructions for stable placement. The location has not been chosen here.
- What it looks like. The house is beige now. The library will try out the palette I am considering for its eventual repaint: one green with two different yellows to compare. The samples are purchased; the exact color names and final yellow choice are still to document.
- What the whole thing costs. The kit is not the entire project. The finish, supplies, planting, delivery, and anything needed for the site belong in the budget too.
Before changing hardware or adding decoration, I want to see what comes in the box and what the instructions require. Not every design opinion needs a separate purchase.
A small roof. A proper name.
The planted top needs more than an attractive arrangement. Before adding soil, I need to check the kit’s instructions, waterproofing, drainage route, and the weight it can safely carry when wet. A liner is a possibility to investigate, not a complete plan by itself.
The plaque will say “Sign of the Eucalyptus.” That is the name the original artist owner used for the house, as I understand its story. I want aged brass and just the words. The matching book stamp can have the eucalyptus detail: “SHARED THROUGH / SIGN OF THE EUCALYPTUS / San Francisco / Take. Read. Pass it on.” Neither has been ordered yet.

The finish
I bought color samples at Cole Hardware in North Beach and plan to use them to paint the library. Exact colors, product labels, and quantities are still to document; suitability as the final outdoor finish needs checking before application.
The tools and hardware
We use Milwaukee tools in our household. The project list will identify the exact tools actually used, separating already-owned tools from new purchases and hardware supplied with the kit. No specific model is recommended here yet.
The planting and first books
Still to choose. Planting needs to work with the location and planter instructions; the first books can come from what is already on the shelf.
Kit purchase and local paint-sample purchases are recorded. Exact paint products and tool models still need documenting before they can be linked; personal-use recommendations will wait until there is actual use to report.
The reveal needs a receipt.
The kit order totals $155.32: $142.99 for the kit, $0 shipping, and $12.33 listed as estimated tax in the order summary. This records my order, not the current selling price or the complete project cost.
Additional supplies and active work time are not recorded yet. The final account will include rework, outside help, and anything gifted or already owned, with those categories kept separate.
The next update should show the actual kit, the intended spot, and the finish samples. The reveal comes after the work; a follow-up comes after living with it. No verdict on outdoor durability before it has been outdoors.
